Details of the Iowa State University Scholarship
The Borel Global Fellows Program aims to combat food and nutrition insecurity while enhancing wealth and health for subsistence farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa.
This mission is realized by training scientists at Iowa State University, equipping them to become leaders in knowledge and innovation while working and residing in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The program was initiated in 2018, thanks to the generous contribution of ISU alumni Jim (’78 Agricultural Business) and Marcia (’78 Family Environment) Borel.
Eligibility Criteria for the Borel Global Fellowship
To qualify for the fellowship, applicants must:
- Be admitted into a graduate program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
- Hold citizenship from a Sub-Saharan African country.
- Commit to using their graduate studies as preparation for a career focused on improving food security in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Conduct the majority of their graduate research within Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Intend to live and work in Sub-Saharan Africa upon completing their studies.
Benefits of the Iowa State University Scholarship 2025
- Annual funding of up to $25,000 per student, which can be allocated as a stipend or combined with research funding.
- Support for up to 30 months for Master’s students and up to 42 months for PhD students.
- Additional travel funding for research purposes in Africa.

- Student’s curriculum vitae (CV).
- A copy of the student’s goal statement.

- Submission: Applications must be submitted by Iowa State University professors on behalf of the students. Graduate students cannot submit applications directly.
Professors should request support only for graduate students already admitted into a program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
