PROJECT FOCUS
OptiMA + Digital Triage
Simplified malnutrition protocol

The Alliance for International Medical Action (ALIMA) is currently hiring nurses for its RISQ Digital Project that embeds the OptiMA approach in northern Nigeria. This is not a standard nursing role. You will deliver frontline care to children suffering from acute malnutrition while using digital tools to collect research-grade data that helps improve treatment protocols across the region.

ALIMA has run health and nutrition programmes in Katsina State (Kaita LGA) and neighbouring states since 2016. The current opening focuses on Inpatient Therapeutic Feeding Centres (ITFC) and Inpatient Departments (IPD), combining clinical work with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) research standards.

Why This ALIMA Nurse Role Stands Out in 2026

Northern Nigeria continues to face high rates of childhood malnutrition. ALIMA’s OptiMA protocol simplifies treatment using Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) and oedema checks instead of more complex measurements. This allows more children to receive care earlier and at lower cost.

Broader reach

Treat more children with the same resources through simplified admission criteria.

Digital innovation

Use the RISQ app to record and interpret seven vital signs consistently for research and better outcomes.

Research contribution

Your data directly supports studies that shape future humanitarian nutrition guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

RISQ Digital Project & OptiMA Clinical Work

  • Perform emergency triage for children aged 6–59 months using the RISQ standard procedure and app
  • Master and accurately record the seven vital signs (heart rate, respiratory rate, respiratory effort, oxygen needs/saturation, temperature, awareness level) and interpret scores correctly
  • Admit and manage patients using simplified MUAC and oedema-based criteria
  • Monitor progress through regular MUAC, oedema checks, weight tracking and clinical assessment
  • Identify complications, non-responders and defaulters and refer promptly to Stabilisation Centres
  • Provide integrated management of common childhood illnesses alongside malnutrition treatment

Good Clinical Practice (GCP) & Research Compliance

  • Obtain and document informed consent from caregivers before enrolling children into the OptiMA programme
  • Follow approved study protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) strictly
  • Collect, record and report clinical and research data with complete integrity and traceability
  • Report adverse events and protocol deviations according to guidelines
  • Participate in monitoring visits, audits and supervision activities

Patient Care, Counselling & Community Work

  • Educate caregivers on correct Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) use, feeding practices and hygiene
  • Deliver Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) counselling
  • Support community outreach and screening activities

Data, Logistics & General Duties

  • Maintain accurate patient registers and Case Report Forms (CRFs)
  • Monitor RUTF and medical supply stock levels and ensure proper storage
  • Strictly follow Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols and biomedical equipment maintenance
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and flag implementation gaps to management

Requirements & Who Should Apply

Must Have
  • Registered Nurse (RN) with current valid practising licence
  • At least 1 year of relevant nursing experience
  • Willingness to work in remote, resource-limited settings
  • Ability to work under pressure and remain flexible
Strong Advantage
  • Previous experience in nutrition programmes (CMAM, IMAM, OptiMA or RISQ)
  • Experience in humanitarian or NGO settings
  • Strong paediatric clinical assessment skills
  • Experience with research data collection or GCP principles

ALIMA provides protocol-specific training. However, nurses who already understand MUAC measurement, paediatric vital signs and basic malnutrition management settle in faster.

Salary and Benefits

ALIMA offers competitive pay according to its national salary scale for the position level. Current employee data shows an average of approximately ₦317,000 per month across roles. Expect field per diems, possible accommodation support or allowance, health coverage, and professional development opportunities typical of international humanitarian organisations operating in Nigeria.

Exact package is discussed during the recruitment process and depends on experience and contract terms.

How to Apply – Step by Step (Deadline: July 7, 2026)

  1. 1. Prepare your CV (highlight any nutrition, paediatric or humanitarian experience), valid RN licence, and any certificates in CMAM/IYCF or research methods.
  2. 2. Complete the official Google Form carefully. Double-check all entries for accuracy – data integrity matters in this role.
  3. 3. Submit before July 7, 2026. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and positions can close early.
  4. 4. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interview and possible practical assessment.

Final Word

This ALIMA nurse position offers meaningful clinical work, exposure to innovative malnutrition protocols, and the chance to contribute to research that can improve care for children across Nigeria and similar contexts. With the deadline only days away, qualified nurses should apply immediately.

If you are a registered nurse who wants to combine hands-on paediatric care with real impact and professional growth in the humanitarian sector, this role is worth pursuing.
