IJP German-Japanese Fellowship Programme 2023 (up to 4,000 Euros) Applications are open for the IJP German-Japanese Fellowship Program 2023. Under the German-Asian Fellowship Program for Journalists, fellowships have been awarded annually to German and Asian journalists since 1995. Due to geopolitical changes and Reflecting the importance of Japan as host of the G7 meeting, the IJP will for the first time offer a scholarship project exclusively for Japan in 2023.

This program will have a strong emphasis on economics, geopolitics, environment/energy and new technologies. A total of five journalists from Japan and five from Germany will have the opportunity to do so.
participate in a two-month stay abroad in the respective countries.

The fellowships begin in mid-October with a two and a half day joint introductory meeting in Berlin. Before that, there will be two online meetings in September, which will give participants the first opportunity to get to know each other. Through short lectures, an insight will also be given into the respective customs of the host country in everyday working life. Stays in the host country, which generally last up to eight weeks, take place between mid-October and mid-December 2023.

Funding

  • All delegates of the programme receive a one-off payment of 4,000 Euro from IJP. This should cover most travel, food and accommodation expenses as well as health insurance. Payment by the host media is not to be expected.

Eligibility

  • Open to all journalists between 28 and 45 years of age who work as freelancers or as permanent employees for a Japanese media company.
  • Knowledge of the German language is not a prerequisiste, however, working knowledge of English is expected.

Application

The following documents must be submitted in one PDF document by May 15, 2023:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • A letter of reference from the head of department or the editor (which also supports the application, guarantees leave for the duration of the scholarship, if applicable, and serves as proof of journalistic activity)
  • A list of links to relevant articles
  • An overview of a specific research project on two pages should be a prerequisite for a successful application, other research ideas could simply be briefly outlined
  • In addition, a 1.5-minute application video in English must be submitted, clearly stating the motivation of the host country and the research project. A registration via mobile phone is sufficient. Send the video via wetransfer and include the download link in the PDF.

Selection will be made without legal recourse by a jury based on
application file and, if necessary, a virtual selection interview.
