Job Title: Senior Financial Accountant – Nigeria

Location: Lagos, Sub Saharan Africa, NG

Role Purpose

  • At an unprecedented time of change globally, the British Council seeks an experienced Senior Financial Accountant to oversee financial control specialism within the Finance Function in Nigeria.
  • The role is accountable for the operational and strategic leadership of British Council Nigeria’s Financial Control activities and team spread across different locations in the country. Focusing on timely, accurate, complete financial accounting and reporting in line with internal organisational requirements and external regulatory standards, while acting as a trusted partner to the business delivery and operational support teams. This role supports the Country Head of Finance with the end to end accounting process across the operation; including month and year end close, and ensures consistent, accurate and robust financial accounting processes in line with accounting practices and corporate policies.
  • The role holder will act as the finance lead for the financial control function in Nigeria, leading the accounting team, and acting as one of the key finance business partners to senior management teams across Nigeria operations.
  • The role will manage a team of accountants based in multiple locations.

The role holder will:

  • Manage end to financial accounting function for Nigeria while ensuring accuracy, completeness and timeliness of accounting transactions and reporting
  • Act as one of the key finance business partners to senior managers across operations in Nigeria.
  • Ensure compliance with financial reporting standards (IFRS, FRS102 – The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland), and all relevant local statutory regulations, including tax-related legislations, foreign exchange policies, etc.
  • The finance function has gone through several change programmes, and the post holder will play a key role in sustainability and achieving desired results of the changes and improvement projects.
  • The organisation requires the financial function to have a level of commercial finance acumen as we expand our income generating activities, streamline our portfolio and target more partnership income. As a result, the role holder will play a key role in driving income target/performance.

Requirements
Essential:

  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Qualified accountant – ACA, ACCA.
  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Minimum of 5 years post-qualification experience.
  • At least 6 years in a similar finance role.
  • Able to relay complex financial information in an easy-to-understand way to support non-financial managers to deliver against financial performance indicators.
  • Experience of managing a diverse team or group of stakeholders in multiple locations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience of an ERP system (SAP preferably).
  • A very detailed understanding of financial control processes applicable to Commercial and/or Charitable organisations.
  • Track record of managing key finance function in international / multinational organisation in similar context; and leading an efficient, innovative and result oriented team.

Desirable:

  • Experience working with the Big 4 audit firm.
  • Master’s Degree.
  • CFA, CGMA, CIMA, CITN.
  • Demonstrable experience of thinking creatively to design / redesign business processes to make measurable step-change efficiency gains.
  • Experience of overseeing, supporting and significantly improving financial management capability and performance of individuals and teams outside of formal / direct line management control.
  • Deliver and support the implementation of stringent financial requirements to multi-disciplinary internal staff and external partners.
  • Direct experience of applying financial controls and procedures within complex and high-risk operating environments to meet challenging contractual standards

Remuneration

Job Title: General Ledger Accountant – Nigeria

Location: Lagos, Sub Saharan Africa, NG

Role Purpose

  • The post holder manages the end to end review and reconciliation of accounting information across the operation, including general ledger reconciliation activities for the branch and subsidiaries, manages accounting data analysis, audit of financial data for accuracy and completeness, and supports the Senior Financial Accountant with month / annual closing activities and preparation of financial statements in line with IFRS.

Main Accountabilities / Challenges for this Role

  • The ideal candidate leads the Record to Report (R2R) activities and all General ledger reconciliation tasks for British Council entities in Nigeria.
  • Guarantee integrity of financial data by performance of reviews and reconciliations in line with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), UK Financial Reporting Standards (FRS 102), and all relevant local statutory regulations, including tax-related legislations, foreign exchange policies, etc.
  • Manages review of outputs from the AR, AP, and Exams Accountants, and recommends improvement in accounting processes.

Main Accountabilities but not limited to the following:

  • The post-holder will manage Audit of Financial Information for Accuracy
  • Perform minimum of 2 days a week call-over/review of the previous days’ transactions for accuracy and completeness, and prompt identification and correction of errors.
  • In collaboration with the Tax & Intercompany accountant, review and Reconcile all Tax General Ledger balances for completeness and accuracy.
  • Ensure prepayment, accruals, deferrals, stock adjustment, depreciation entries are done in a timely manner and are accurate in line with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), British Council Accounting Manuals, and UK Financial Reporting Standards (FRS 102), resulting in better monthly financial reporting.
  • Collaborating with business units and other support functions to gather, analyse, and interpret relevant financial information.
  • Ensure that all documents and financial information are recorded on-time and accurately in the accounting system and in line International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), British Council Accounting Manuals, and UK Financial Reporting Standards (FRS 102) for internal and external reporting compliance.
  • Lead on financial data adjustments and entries (e.g., accruals, deferrals, reclassifications, interdepartmental entries) into the ledger.
  • You will be responsible for account Reconciliation, Monthly & Annual Closing, and Reporting
  • Support monthly / month-end accounts review process in collaboration with Senior Financial Accountant.
  • Review, reconciliation, and confirmation of all British Council’s ledger balances (LC1, LC2, LC3).
  • Review and substantiate trial balance and Balance sheet positions for all entities.
  • Key point of contact for Shared Services Centre (SSC) balance sheet management team.
  • Reconciliation of Subledgers: Bank, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Fixed Assets, etc. in line with agreed timelines.
  • Be involved in the monthly financial statement close, accounts payable and accounts receivable processes, annual audit, accounting and other financial systems, and accounting policies, procedures, and controls.
  • As with any business that experiences peaks and troughs of activity, there is likely to be a need to work outside office hours from time to time.

Role Specific Knowledge and Experience
The successful candidate will need to possess the following requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or equivalent with at least 4 years’ experience in accounting and financial reporting and similar role
  • Experience in General Ledger management and Record to Report (R2R)
  • Good knowledge of transaction taxes and general accounting practices along with international accounting standards (IAS/IFRS)
  • Proficient in MS Office applications: Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Qualified accountant – ACA, ACCA

Desirable:

  • Master’s Degree
  • CFA, CGMA, CIMA, CITN
  • Experience in the use of SAP
  • Auditing experience.

Job Title: Tax & Intercompany Accountant – Nigeria

Role Purpose

  • The post supports the Senior Financial Accountant and Country Head of Finance with end to end oversight of tax management across the operation; including Tax planning, Transfer pricing management and advisory, centralised management of tax reviews, intercompany accounting, among others in line with standard accounting practices and corporate policies.
  • The role holder will act as the tax and intercompany focal point for the finance function in Nigeria and acting as one of the key finance business partners to operations, business delivery teams, and management teams across Nigeria operations on tax and intercompany related matters.

Main Accountabilities / Challenges for this Role

  • The ideal candidate will manage end to end tax (tax accounting, tax returns, analysing tax regulations, monitoring industry trends, completing tax reports, etc.) and intercompany accounting (reviewing and verifying intercompany charges, reviewing and resolving out of balance / intercompany reconciling items, Intercompany account settlement, etc.) function for Nigeria while ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of accounting transactions and reporting in line with internal policies and external regulatory requirements..

Main accountabilities but not limited to the following:

  • The post-holder will recommend effective tax strategies that comply with relevant laws and promote British Council’s financial well-being.
  • Develop and prepare tax correspondence and documentation to support the Nigeria entities’ tax compliance checks / reviews.
  • Develop continuous technical skills by remaining up to date on trends, new developments and tax authority decisions and applying those learnings to improve British Council tax compliance, suggest policies that diminish tax burden, etc.
  • Interpret and implement new tax rules/amendments and train Financial Control, Financial Planning and Analysis, Commercial Finance and Risk & Compliance Teams on the new rules and processes required.
  • Identify opportunities for proactive tax planning.
  • Responsible for the management of all Nigeria direct and indirect tax matters, including ensuring tax returns are accurately prepared and filed on time, paid as at when due, and tax audits are managed effectively.
  • Management of local tax forecast and local tax projects as part of the financial planning cycle.
  • Provide expertise to ensure tax accounting and tax accruals are accurate and recorded appropriately in British Council Nigeria entities.
  • Responsible for preparation and filing of Corporate income tax returns which are accurately prepared and filed on a timely basis.
  • Chase for the payment of long overdue accounts by sending follow-up emails to the Accounts payable contacts in SSC, and the various branches and subsidiaries
  • Identify / review and resolves invoicing issues.
  • Generate the cost centre / WBS balances for recharge for the period and prepares draft of the invoices for approval by Senior Financial Accountant or Country Head of Finance.
  • Determine appropriate Intercompany accounting details (e.g. GL accounts, Cost Centres, Transaction Type, Tax Code, Plant Code, etc.), when required
  • Park intercompany account journal entries and submit recharge / billing requests on the Intercompany Portal (ICO Portal).
  • Monitor pending Intercompany requests on the ICO portal and follow up relevant parties who need to action such requests.
  • In conjunction with SSC ICO team, support preparation of recurring entries’ accruals
  • Ensure timely expense recognition for year-end Intercompany related accruals
  • In collaboration with the GL Accountant, perform preliminary and final Intercompany reconciliations for all branches and subsidiaries
  • Validate dispute by checking the records and supporting documents for accuracy.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Financial Accountant in the monthly cash forecast process
  • Serves as the Nigeria intermediary for all branch and subsidiary related matters
  • First point of contact for all Intercompany related matters/queries for Nigeria
  • Collaborate with Shared Services Centre (SSC) intercompany team to achieve improved delivery, support services, and learning.
  • Receives bank statement and matches payment details against open invoices for clearing by SSC.
  • Verify and review details of intercompany requests submitted for / against Nigeria entities
  • Ensure that the approach to tax and intercompany accounting within the Finance function is fit-for-purpose and able to respond promptly to changes in the portfolio and operating context.
  • As with any business that experiences peaks and troughs of activity, there is likely to be a need to work outside office hours from time to time.

Role Specific Knowledge and Experience
The successful candidate will need to possess the following requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 4 years progressive experience in middle management tax finance roles, including tax reporting, tax compliance, tax accounting in a in a multi-jurisdiction / international environment.
  • Qualified accountant – ACA, ACCA
  • In depth experience and technical knowledge of tax accounting and disclosures for accounting purposes, including deferred tax, prior year adjustments and multiple years, etc.
  • Experience in managing and reconciling intercompany transactions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Successfully completed bachelor’s degree plus professional qualification (ACA / ACCA, and CITN).
  • Experience in dealing with Tax Authorities.

  • Previous work in the similar sector is an added advantage.
  • Ability to assess risks and exercise judgment in making important decisions.
