The Canada Graduate Scholarships – Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements (CGS-MSFSS) offer graduate students a valuable opportunity to gain international research experience and establish global networks. With financial support of up to $6,000, this supplement helps cover the costs associated with conducting research abroad, aiding students in their academic and professional development. The supplement is available to those who hold a Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS) at the master’s or doctoral level, or a Vanier CGS at the doctoral level.

CGS-MSFSS Scholarship Benefits

Recipients of the CGS-MSFSS are eligible for up to $6,000 in funding for their research period abroad, which can last between two to six months. The funding is intended to cover essential expenses such as:

  • Travel costs (e.g., flights, visas)
  • Living expenses (e.g., accommodation, meals)
  • Insurance and other related costs

This support allows students to engage with international research institutions, thereby enriching their academic journey and fostering collaboration between Canadian and international academic communities.

Eligibility

To be considered for the CGS-MSFSS, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or Protected Persons under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
  • Hold an active CGS (master’s or doctoral) or Vanier CGS (doctoral) scholarship.
  • Plan to conduct a research stay abroad for a duration of two to six months.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate program at a Canadian institution throughout the research period abroad.
  • Return to complete their degree at their Canadian institution after the research period abroad.

Applicants who have previously received the CGS-MSFSS during their graduate studies are not eligible to apply again.

Application Process

To apply, students must submit the following:

  • A comprehensive research plan detailing their objectives, methodology, and how the research abroad aligns with their CGS research objectives.
  • A budget outlining anticipated costs for travel, living expenses, and other related expenditures.
  • Letters of support from their current CGS research supervisor and from the proposed host supervisor at the foreign institution.

Each of the funding agencies (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC) has its own application form and instructions. Applicants should consult their institution’s internal deadlines as institutions must rank and submit applications before sending them to the appropriate agency.
