UBA Foundation Opens Portal For National Essey Competition (NEC) 2022 Application The UBA Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, has announced the launch of the 2022 edition of its National Essay Competition (NEC) in Nigeria with a call for entries.
The annual National Essay Competition (NEC) is part of the UBA Foundation’s education initiative which aims to promote literacy and encourage healthy and intellectual competition among secondary school students in Nigeria and across the African continent.
In its 12th edition, this year will see increased participation from upper secondary school students from across Nigeria who can now submit their applications from the comfort of their own home or school via the UBAF NEC Digital Submission portal.
Over the past three years, the UBA Foundation has revised prices upwards to reflect economic realities and the effects of inflation. NEC 2022 prices have increased significantly by 40% year-on-year.
The first prize winner will receive a 5 million naira scholarship to study at an African university of their choice, up from 3.5 million naira in 2021. The second and third prizes are now 3 million naira and 2.5 million respectively naira. from N2.5 m or N2.
In addition, the top 12 essay winners will return home with new laptops and other teaching supplies to support their tertiary research and other studies.
UBA Foundation executive director Ms. Bola Atta said that with the digital application portal, more secondary school students across the country will be able to scan and submit their applications and apply for scholarships to study at all levels. University of their choice on the African continent.
She said: “Over time we have worked hard to ensure our UBA Foundation programs continue to have a meaningful impact on life. We recognize that using technology-driven initiatives is part of modernity, and we aim to reach students in their comfort zones.
“Any Nigerian high school student who so wishes can register for the NEC 2022 and have a chance to win a fully funded college education through the UBA Foundation,” said Atta.
This year’s essay topic is: “ASUU strikes have often cost Nigerian students time. Advise the Nigerian government on how to reach an agreement with ASUU to improve higher education in the country.

All essays must be handwritten (not typed) and students have until October 14, 2022 to upload scanned copies of their handwritten materials and IDs to the digital portal at www.ubagroup.com/national-essay-competition. No physical copies will be accepted this year.
Submissions will be judged by judges who are professors from prestigious Nigerian universities. The professors will select the top 12 finalists who will win consolation prizes, including personal computers. These 12 finalists will write another supervised essay announcing the top three winners in the grand final in November at UBA headquarters in Lagos, Nigeria.
The national essay competition has been launched in other African countries where UBA operates to give more African children a chance.
The UBA Foundation embodies the CSR objectives of the UBA Group and seeks to have a positive impact on society through several worthy projects and initiatives. The foundation, through its education pillar, has donated hundreds of thousands of books to students across Africa as part of the Read Africa initiative, which aims to encourage and promote a culture of reading among the African youth. The National Essay Contest has provided hundreds of students with the opportunity to improve their lives through higher education.
