About the United Nations – The Nippon Foundation Fellowship

The United Nations – The Nippon Foundation Fellowship focuses on Marine Science to support the development of government officials and intermediate professionals from developing states in the areas of maritime affairs, maritime law, and related disciplines. Fellows will gain insights into the international legal framework, key issues, and best practices in maritime affairs, as well as deepen their understanding of the United Nations and develop professional skills. Additionally, fellows will conduct individual research under academic supervision and write essays on topics of their choice.

Upon completing the fellowship, participants are expected to return to their home countries and apply their in-depth knowledge and extensive experience to help develop a comprehensive United Nations Convention on Maritime Policy and Law. This will contribute to the enforcement of established legal systems and include designing, implementing, and/or testing specific marine improvement projects.

Eligibility Criteria for UN Fellowship

To be eligible for the United Nations Nippon Foundation Fellowship 2023-24, applicants must meet the following criteria:

– Age: Applicants must be between 25 and 40 years old.
– Education: Successful completion of the first university degree, demonstrating the ability to conduct independent advanced academic research and study.
– Professional Experience: Mid-level professionals from national government agencies in developing states or from other government/non-government agencies dealing directly with maritime affairs are eligible. Nominations and recommendations must be provided by an official who can verify the nature of the applicant’s work related to maritime affairs and law enforcement and explain how the fellowship will contribute to these activities.
– Proposed Research: The research and study program should directly contribute to the formulation and enforcement of maritime policies and programs.
– Commitment: Fellows must be free of all non-association responsibilities throughout the fellowship period, unless authorized by the Division.
