Germany Open Portal for Skilled Nigerians to Apply for Jobs
The Government of Germany has introduced a new initiative termed the ‘Opportunity Card,’ designed to attract skilled workers from outside the European Union (EU) to explore work opportunities in Germany.
The portal where applicants are instructed to apply includes Nigeria as one of the eligible countries of residence for prospective applicants.
This announcement was made on Germany’s Federal Foreign Office Consular Services Portal on June 1, 2024.
What is the “Opportunity Card”?
The Opportunity Card, a type of residence permit, allows individuals from third countries—nations outside the EU—to enter Germany to seek employment.
Who’s Eligible for the “Opportunity Card”?
The Opportunity Card operates on a points-based system with the following requirements:
- Completion of a degree or at least two years of training recognized by the state of issuance.
- German language proficiency at least at level A1 or English proficiency at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
- Sufficient financial means of at least 1,027 euros per month (as of 2024) to cover living expenses for the duration of the stay in Germany.

Period of Stay for the “Opportunity Card”
The card is valid for up to one year and can be extended if the individual finds qualified employment, enabling them to obtain a subsequent residence permit for further job searching or employment.
During your stay for the purpose of finding a job, you have the opportunity to work up to 20 hours a week in a part-time job. Additionally, you can take up trial jobs for up to two weeks at a time to familiarize yourself with potential jobs.
How to Apply for the “Opportunity Card”
You can apply for the Opportunity Card online via the Consular Services Portal or locally at your German mission. Click here to apply online.
Guidance for Nigerian Applicants
For Nigerian applicants, the German government advised following up with Germany’s diplomatic mission in Nigeria for a visa.
“You can only apply for your visa at the German mission responsible for you. The responsibility depends on the district in which you reside. If the online application is not available at your competent German mission, please apply for your visa on-site. You will find further information on the website of your German mission,” it stated.
The call by Germany is the latest among foreign countries’ efforts to search for expertise around the world.
