How the 7th Board of NDDC Has Transformed the Niger Delta Region

By Martins Ogolo

The 7th Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) was appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) on 29 August 2023. This appointment was met with mixed reactions, as many were unsure what to expect from the board, particularly given that previous boards had underperformed for various reasons.

It is fitting to describe the current board as “round pegs in round holes,” beginning with Chairman Chiedu Ebie Esq, a knowledgeable leader with vision and foresight; MD/CEO Dr Samuel Ogbuku, a diligent administrator; Chief Boma Lyaye, the ED of Finance and Admin, who ensures prudence in all financial dealings of the Commission; Sir Victor Antai, ED of Projects, who guarantees the execution of legacy and lasting projects; and Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde, Executive Director of Corporate Services, under whose leadership the activities of the commission have become more prominent. Alongside them are the state representatives: Hon. Dimaro Denyanbofa (Bayelsa State), Hon. Abasi Nkono (Akwa-Ibom State), Hon. Monday Igbuya (Delta State), Chief Tony Okocha (Rivers State), Hon. Patrick Aisowieren (Edo State), Hon. Kyrian Uchegbu (Imo State), Hon. Victor Akinjo (Ondo State), Hon. Dimgba Eruba (Abia State), and Hon. Orok Otu Duke (Cross River State), all of whom have performed commendably within their respective states.

A key reason for the board’s success so far is the camaraderie they share, which makes each meeting and gathering feel like a family reunion. Cooperation and cohesion are evident, even to the untrained eye, thereby accelerating development across the region. Like a world-class football team, the success of “the team” depends on the quality of its players and their ability to perform in their respective roles. This is exemplified by the performance of all 23 members of the “Renewed” 7th board of the NDDC, which has already surpassed the achievements of previous boards.

The 7th Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) marks a turning point in the development trajectory of the Niger Delta region. Through focused leadership, improved governance, and people-centred programmes, the Board has worked tirelessly to reposition the Commission as a genuine agent of sustainable development.

One of the major achievements of the 7th Board is the emphasis on institutional reforms and accountability. By strengthening internal processes and promoting transparency, the Board has restored confidence in the NDDC and ensured that development funds are more effectively utilised for projects that directly benefit communities.

In terms of infrastructure, the Commission has achieved visible progress. Critical road networks, bridges, electricity projects, and water schemes have been completed or revitalised across several Niger Delta states, thereby improving connectivity, stimulating local economies, and increasing access to essential services.

The 7th Board has also prioritised human capital development. Through scholarship programmes, youth empowerment initiatives, skills acquisition schemes, and health interventions, thousands of young people and vulnerable residents have gained opportunities to improve their livelihoods and quality of life.

Equally important is the board’s commitment to stakeholder engagement and partnership. By working closely with state governments, communities, and development partners, the NDDC has ensured that projects are better aligned with the genuine needs of the people.

End Note:

It is clear that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu carefully selected and assembled the Niger Delta Development “Galacticos” to lead the region towards a new era of prosperity and the ‘promised land.’

Overall, the 7th Board of the NDDC has laid a solid foundation for enduring transformation in the Niger Delta Region, fostering development, restoring trust, and offering renewed hope for a more prosperous and inclusive future.
