Massive Recruitment for Medical and Health Workers at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital 2024 Governor Siminalayi Fubara has given the green light for the immediate hiring of 500 healthcare professionals at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital in Port Harcourt.
Prof. Chizindu Alikor, the Chief Medical Director of RSUTH, praised the governor for this decision during an announcement in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.
In addition to the new hires, the governor has authorized the advancement of 400 current employees at the hospital who have held their positions for more than eight years.
This move follows a recent meeting between the governor and the newly appointed members of the Rivers State Health Management Board.
Alikor clarified that the approval for the recruitment of 500 staff members stemmed from an official communication from the state Civil Service Commission to the management of RSUTH.
In an official statement, it was revealed that the Rivers State Civil Service Commission has approved Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s directive for the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital to hire 500 healthcare workers promptly. The directive mandates the commencement of this process immediately, with completion expected within three months, and the new staff are anticipated to begin work within the same timeframe.
Furthermore, the CMD of RSUTH confirmed an earlier instruction to promote more than 400 employees who had not received promotions in over eight years. This news brought about celebrations within the hospital community, as they welcomed Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s approval for the long-awaited promotions.
“It brought immense joy and excitement to the hospital upon its reception.”
In another development, Dr. Albert Ekop, a retired surgeon in Akwa Ibom State, has called on governments at all levels to reconsider the compensation of medical professionals as a means to address the issue of brain drain.
Speaking in Uyo during an interview with journalists following the launch of his book “The Tailor,” the octogenarian emphasized the need for a reevaluation of medical student training curriculums. He advocated for a return to the notion that healthcare is a social service rather than solely an economic endeavor, believing that instilling this perspective in young medical professionals could diminish the desire to seek opportunities abroad.
Furthermore, Ekop urged governments not to dismiss the concerns of healthcare workers lightly. He stressed the importance of recognizing their sacrifices and ensuring fair compensation, noting that medical practitioners are affected by the same economic pressures as everyone else.
Regarding his book’s title, “The Tailor,” Ekop revealed that it was inspired by his father’s initial desire for him to pursue tailoring as a profession.
Following the approval of His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, Governor of Rivers State, for employment of Medical & Health Workers into the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, eligible candidates are welcomed to apply to fill the underlisted vacant positions in the Hospital.
