Job Summary

  • The Research Associate will provide support in analysing qualitative data for the USAID Feed the Future Nigeria Agricultural Extension & Advisory Services Activity annual survey for FY24.
  • The project works to increase smallholder farmers’ productivity, incomes, and household nutrition status in Kebbi, Niger, Kaduna, Benue, Ebonyi, Cross-River, and Delta states of Nigeria through strengthening sustainable agricultural extension and advisory services.
  • The project particularly focuses on aquaculture, cowpea, maize, rice, and soybean value chains.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Support the training of moderators and transcribers in preparation for the qualitative data collection.
  • Ensure data quality assurance throughout the data collection period by reviewing interview scripts and providing necessary feedback.
  • Conduct analysis related to the study using relevant software such as Nvivo, Atlas etc.

Qualifications & Requirements
Education:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Management, Sociology / Rural Development, Agricultural Economics, Economics or Statistics.

Experience:

  • S/he will have at least 5 years’ experience in qualitative research work (data collection, validation, entry, and analysis)
  • Proficiency in the use of qualitative analytical software’s such as NVivo, Atlas etc.
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal, including ability to effectively communicate across cultures.
  • Experience in the provision of technical support in agricultural, food security, livelihood, marketing, and economic growth.
  • Good English language skills are essential.

Background

  • The Lead Consultant will lead the quantitative component of the USAID Feed the Future Nigeria Agricultural Extension & Advisory Services Activity annual survey for FY24.
  • The project works to increase smallholder farmers’ productivity, incomes, and household nutrition status in Kebbi, Niger, Kaduna, Benue, Ebonyi, Cross-River, and Delta states of Nigeria through strengthening sustainable agricultural extension and advisory services.
  • The project particularly focuses on aquaculture, cowpea, maize, rice, and soybean value chains.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Extension Activity MEL team in finalizing the survey instrument.
  • Prepare a Field Procedure Plan, to include an approach to quality control for all aspects of work.
  • Coordinate field implementation of quantitative data collection.
  • Train field supervisors and enumerators in preparation for the quantitative data collection.
  • Develop plan and lead the piloting of annual survey tools.
  • Ensure accurate collection of data from the field
  • Review and provide progress updates on activity.
  • Draft final survey report
  • Respond to all comments on draft document and finalize survey report.

Qualifications & Requirements
Education:

  • A Master’s Degree in any of the following: sociology/rural development, agricultural economics, economics, and statistics.

Experience:

  • S/he will have at least 10 years’ experience in survey fieldwork (data collection, validation, entry, and analysis) and experience in leading teams in field (training, field logistics, human relations, teamwork)
  • Experience in survey planning methodologies, participatory evaluation, community-based approaches, developing and evaluating integrated food security, Agriculture and MSMEs programs.
  • Relevant Contextual experience of carrying out related studies in targeted locations and value chains while understanding of local government structure in Nigeria will be an added advantage.
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal, including ability to effectively communicate across cultures.
  • Experience and ability in the provision of technical support in Agricultural, marketing, and economic growth.
  • Strong analytical skills and sociological focus; knowledge, understanding and practical implementation of survey methods.
  • Excellent grasp and understanding of key gender, equity and social inclusion concepts, terminologies in long term development and empowerment programs.
  • Good English language skills are essential.

  • Ensure data quality assurance throughout the data collection period by conducting daily data review and spot checks and providing necessary feedback.
  • Carry out data cleaning and ensuring consistency in the dataset collected from the field.
  • Conduct analysis related to the study and creating tables and charts.

Qualifications & Requirements
Education:

  • A bachelor’s degree in statistics, computer science, information technology, sociology / rural development, agricultural, economics, economics or statistics.

Experience:

  • S/he will have at least 5 years’ experience in survey fieldwork and information management (data collection, validation, entry, and analysis).
  • Experience in survey planning methodologies, participatory evaluation, community-based approaches, developing and evaluating integrated food security and development programs.
  • Proficiency in the use of analytical softwares such as SPSS, STATA, R, etc.
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal, including ability to effectively communicate across cultures.
  • Experience in the provision of technical support in agricultural, food security, livelihood, marketing, and economic growth.
  • Good English language skills are essential.

  • Facilitate FGDs and administer key informants’ interviews.
