We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Clinical Psychologist

Location: Port Harcourt, Rivers
Employment Type: Part-time

Job Summary

  • The Clinical Psychologist will identify, diagnose, and treat psychological, emotional, and behavioral issues in clients. They will develop and implement individualized treatment plans, provide therapy to individuals and groups, and work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to enhance the mental well-being of clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Psychological Assessment and Consultation: Conduct comprehensive psychological assessments and consultations to diagnose psychological, emotional, or behavioural disorders.
  • Treatment Planning: Develop and implement individual treatment plans tailored to clients’ specific needs, including children and adults.
  • Therapy Provision: Provide therapy to groups and individuals, employing various therapeutic methods such as cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy, talk therapy, and person-centred therapy.
  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Work alongside doctors, nurses, social workers, psychiatrists, and occupational therapists to deliver holistic care.
  • Group Therapy Facilitation: Lead and facilitate diverse group therapeutic sessions.
  • Behavioural Counselling: Counsel individuals and groups on issues such as stress, substance abuse, and family situations to promote behaviour modification.
  • Treatment Modification: Adapt treatment activities or approaches based on changes in clients’ status.
  • Skill Development: Guide clients in developing skills or strategies to manage their problems.
  • Biopsychosocial Approach: Utilize a Biopsychosocial Approach for comprehensive assessment and treatment planning.
  • Psychological Testing: Administer, score, and interpret psychological tests to gather information on individuals’ intelligence, achievements, interests, and personalities.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate documentation of progress notes and treatment plans using an electronic medical record system.
  • Client Evaluation: Evaluate clients’ physical or mental condition by reviewing client information.
  • Resource Referral: Refer patients, clients, or family members to community resources or specialists as necessary.
  • Crisis Intervention: Act as client advocates to coordinate required services or resolve emergencies in crisis situations.
  • Family Therapy: Coordinate family-inclusive therapy to assist families in understanding, dealing with, or supporting patients.
  • Program Evaluation: Evaluate the effectiveness of counselling programs on clients’ progress towards defined objectives.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Meet with families, probation officers, police, or other stakeholders to exchange necessary information during the treatment process.
  • Program Planning: Plan, organize, or lead structured counselling, work, study, recreation, or social activities for clients.
  • Substance Abuse Prevention: Conduct programs to prevent substance abuse or improve community health or counselling services.
  • Medication Compliance: Educate clients on the importance of medication compliance.
  • Professional Development: Stay updated on new developments in counselling by reading professional literature, attending courses and seminars, and networking with other social services agencies.
  • Community Engagement: Gather information about community mental health needs or resources to support therapy.
  • Neurodevelopmental Understanding: Have an understanding of neurodevelopmental pathways to diagnose, carry out assessments, and develop appropriate treatment plans.
  • Aftercare Planning: Ensure that discharged clients are transitioned to a robust aftercare plan for proper follow-up and management.

Requirements and Experience

  • A minimum of a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology.
  • At least 2years of clinical experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proactive problem-solving approach.
  • High stress tolerance and emotional stability.
  • High level of professionalism and ability to uphold strict confidentiality.
  • Female candidates preferred gender equality.

Required Skills/Competencies:

  • Ability to observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress.
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques.
  • Effective communication of medical information, test results, diagnoses, and proposed treatments in a manner easily understood by clients.
  • Interviewing and psychological/developmental evaluation skills.
  • Knowledge of psychological test administration, scoring, and interpretation.
  • Ability to maintain emotional stability in dealing with human suffering, emergencies, and other stresses.

Job Summary

  • As a Consultant Psychiatrist at Synapse Services you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the highest standard of patient care.
  • Your expertise will guide the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment processes, contributing significantly to the overall mental health and well-being of our patients.

Roles and Responsibilities
Assessment, Diagnosis, and Treatment:

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients prior to admission.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans.
  • Manage in-patient care, discharge planning, and aftercare services.

Care Planning and Risk Assessment:

  • Construct accurate summaries of patient needs and strengths.
  • Perform comprehensive individualized risk assessments.
  • Contribute to care planning and ensure the safety and well-being of patients.

Clinical Collaboration and Monitoring:

  • Collaborate with the Clinical Director to oversee patient treatment plans.
  • Maintain regular communication with patients, their families, and other concerned parties.
  • Conduct family sessions as needed, aligning with the patient’s treatment plan.

Multidisciplinary Team Leadership:

  • Provide clinical leadership to a multidisciplinary team, including Psychiatric Nurses, Support Workers, and Clinical Psychologists.
  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality, comprehensive services through effective team collaboration.

Interdepartmental Contributions:

  • Contribute to business development, administration, and management within the organization.
  • Form partnerships with other hospitals to enhance service delivery.

Clinical Meetings and Supervision:

  • Organize and supervise weekly clinical meetings to review patient progress and treatment plans.
  • Take an active role in the organization’s sister charity, Reconnect Health Development Initiative.

Service Development:

  • Lead efforts in developing and expanding mental health services.
  • Provide consultant oversight for patients admitted to the centre, ensuring 24/7 accountability for the centre’s services.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Perform any other duties as directed by the Managing Director (MD).
  • Reporting Line: The Consultant Psychiatrist will report directly to the Clinical Director.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Medical Degree (MBBS)
  • Valid medical license to practice in Nigeria.
  • Fellowship (part II) of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria or its equivalent in the relevant speciality with at least 2 years post-Fellowship (Part II) experience.
  • Extensive experience in mental health and substance abuse treatment.
  • Strong leadership and team collaboration skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
